The Church Council has called a Quarterly Business Meeting and Potluck Luncheon on Wednesday, August 5 at 5:30 PM in Fellowship Hall (downstairs cafeteria).
Bring a casserole, a side dish, a salad and/or a dessert.
The Church will provide plates, napkins, silverware, and tableware.
The Mission Committee will share testimonies from the short-term mission trip, and Pastor Ivan+ will share an update on the Church Health Survey.
WHY DO BAPTIST BUSINESS MEETINGS MATTER?
Discerning the Mind of Christ Together
For Baptists, a business meeting is much more than a time to approve budgets, elect leaders, or vote on ministry decisions. At its best, a church business meeting is a spiritual act of worship in which the congregation gathers to prayerfully discern the will of Jesus Christ, the Head of the Church. The Church has held business meetings since the time of the Apostles (Acts 1-2, Acts 15). The Apostle Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 2:16:
“For who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 2:16)
This remarkable promise reminds us that through the Holy Spirit, God’s people are not left to rely merely on human wisdom or personal preference. As believers seek Christ together through Scripture, prayer, humility, and loving conversation, the Holy Spirit enables the congregation to discern the mind of Christ together.
Christ Is the Head of the Church
Baptists believe that Jesus Christ alone is the Head of the Church (Ephesians 1:22-23; Colossians 1:18). No bishop, pastor, deacon, elder, council, committee, or influential member governs Christ’s church independently. Every believer stands equally before the Lord, and together the congregation seeks His direction.
Congregational governance is not democracy in the secular sense—where the majority simply gets its way. Rather, it is a covenant community seeking to discover what Christ desires for His church. The question is never merely: “What do I want?” Instead, every member asks: “What is Jesus Christ calling us to do together?“
Every Member Has a Voice
Because the Holy Spirit indwells every believer, every church member has both the privilege and the responsibility to participate. Business meetings are opportunities to:
- 🙏 Pray together before making decisions.
- 📖 Listen to God’s Word.
- 👂 Hear one another with humility and respect.
- 🤝 Seek unity rather than personal victory.
- 🕊️ Follow the Spirit’s leading, even when it requires sacrifice.
The goal is not to win an argument but to faithfully follow Christ, inspired by the Holy Spirit, so that God the Father’s name is known and glorified.
Voting as an Act of Discipleship
For Baptists, voting is more than expressing an opinion—it is an act of Christian stewardship. When members say “yes” or “no,” raise their hands, stand and cast a ballot, they are not simply choosing between competing ideas. They are prayerfully responding to God’s leading as they understand it, trusting that the Holy Spirit is also at work among the entire congregation. Healthy Baptist churches recognize that the Spirit often speaks through the collective wisdom of the gathered church.
Seeking Unity in Christ
Discerning the mind of Christ does not require unanimous agreement on every issue, but it does call for a spirit of unity, charity, and mutual submission. Jesus Christ and the Apostles repeatedly urged believers to be:
- “of the same mind,”(Romans 15:5, Philippians 2:2, 1 Peter 3:8)
- “united in spirit,”(Ephesians 4:3, Philippians 2:2, Psalm 133:1)
- “maintaining the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”(John 17:22, Romans 12:5, 1 Corinthians 1:10, Colossians 3:14)
When members pray together, study Scripture together, listen respectfully, and place Christ’s mission above personal preferences, the congregation becomes a living testimony to God’s wisdom.
A Sacred Responsibility
Church business meetings are holy moments. Every agenda, every discussion, every report, every motion, and every vote is ultimately about joining God’s work in the world. As members gather, they come not merely as shareholders of an organization, but as disciples of Jesus Christ asking one central question: “Lord Jesus, what is Your will for Your church?” May every Baptist business meeting reflect Paul’s confidence:
“We have the mind of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 2:16)
When a congregation prayerfully seeks Christ together, listens to one another in love, and submits to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, business meetings become more than church governance—they become a faithful expression of congregational discernment and shared discipleship.
